Revealing the Winners : St Andrew’s Hospice Calendar Competition 2018

After all the waiting we are delighted to be able to share the winning entries in this year’s St Andrew’s Hospice Calendar Competition. The judging panel were presented with over 160 entries from which to choose the final images; making for a difficult task.  After around 4 hours of deliberation, discussion and voting the final 12 images for the calendar were selected.

The judging panel consisted of representatives from St. Andrew’s Hospice, New College Lanarkshire and local professional photographers including world-renowned landscape photographer Colin Prior.  Images were selected from submissions across five categories representing the hospice core values of Care, Compassion, Peace, Love and Tranquility.

The winning entries were revealed at an awards ceremony held at Motherwell Campus earlier this month where all of our students gathered to get the first look at the winning images which will create the hospice 2019 calendar.

Drumroll please…

The winning entries are all displayed below and I hope that you will all agree this is a fantastic range of images which will make a great calendar for the 2019.  A unique design of the calendar is that each of the images will be detachable from the page in a postcard format allowing them to be framed/displayed or sent with a message to a loved one.

In addition to the big reveal of the calendar some special awards were also presented.  These were given to students for images which the judging panel felt had best interpreted the competition brief.

A Highly Commended award and a signed print from Colin Prior was awarded to Margaret Ann McKenna for her image “A Father’s Love”.

Additionally, Vikki O’Brien received a Highly Commended award of a signed print from Colin Prior for her image “Lest We Forget, An Old Soldier’s Story” which depicted a still life image featuring items from her own grandfather’s time in the services.

The last award to be made was the overall winner of the competition.  The judges looked at the final set of 12 images and chose the image which they felt best interpreted the brief, represented the hospice values most closely and showed strong photography skills within this.  A unanimous vote selected Katy McGuiness’ image “Fragility of Life” and she was presented with a signed copy of Colin’s book “Scotland’s Finest Landscapes” featuring 200 images from his long-spanning career.

We expect that the calendar will be ready and available to purchase, at a price of £5 per calendar, in September/October.  Calendars will be available to buy in all St. Andrew’s Hospice shops and the college’s Motherwell Campus.  Details will be confirmed later this year.
